Chrome extension for research PDFs

Paper Browser

Read scholarly PDFs in Chrome, preview cited work inline, and follow citation trails without losing the thread of the paper you started from.

Heads up: after installing, add a free OpenAlex API key (preferred) and/or a Semantic Scholar key in the extension settings — citation lookups are slow and rate-limited without one. Follow the two-minute setup guide.

What it does

Explore a paper through its references.

PDF citation markers become hoverable previews with title, authors, year, venue, and abstracts when metadata is available.

Follow PDFs in place

Click a citation to resolve and open the cited paper in the same viewer, with back and forward navigation for the trail.

Session exports

Save the exploration graph as a self-contained HTML page, an Obsidian vault, a compiled BibTeX bibliography, or an optional Semble collection.

Privacy at a glance

Local-first, no ads, no developer data server.

Paper Browser processes PDFs and citation metadata to provide its reader features. It does not sell data, run personalized advertising, or send extension data to a Paper Browser-operated server. Some URLs, citation text, and metadata queries are sent to third-party scholarly services only as needed to resolve papers and metadata.
